Spicy Banana Kefir Smoothie

Spicy Banana Kefir Smoothie

Ryan pouring homemade Kefir into the blender

This is a quick and easy to make smoothie that imparts plenty of good nutrition. Probiotics, healthy bacteria, and friendly flora are all terms that are becoming more mainstream, which this smoothie has plenty of via the kefir.

Kefir is a traditional fermented beverage teaming with the “good” bacteria that live in your digestive tract. These friendlies help digest your food, help you assimilate nutrients, and play a starring role in the health and effectiveness of your immune system. Their importance cannot be overstated.

Maintaining a healthy colony of bacteria is essential to good health, but is quite challenging in today’s world of antibiotics, processed food, and environmental toxins. Consuming kefir on a regular basis is just what your digestive tract needs to stay flush with healthy bacteria. Kefir also happens to blend exceptionally well as the base of your smoothie. This recipe calls for straight kefir, but I usually go 50/50 with kefir and either milk, water, or tea.

Kefir has a tangy taste that I’ve grown to love. A small cup is perfect after a hot, spicy meal, or to quench sugar cravings. Homemade kefir is your best option, but store bought is still quite good.

Feel free to add a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg instead of measuring out 1/4 teaspoon of each…at least that’s how I roll with the spices. Enjoy!
